INTRODUCTION VIDEO — COMING SOON

YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO IT ALL ALONE.
LEARNING TO LEAD STARTS WITH YOUR NEXT CHOICE.

01 — LEARN:
UNDERSTAND SELF-REGULATION & AUTONOMY

WHAT IS SELF-REGULATION?

Self-regulation means learning to observe your actions, recognize what helps your development and make useful adjustments.

In tennis, this can include setting a training intention, monitoring your effort and attention, noticing your progress and evaluating what you actually practised.

Self-regulation is not about controlling everything perfectly. It is about learning to guide your actions and make informed decisions over time.

WHAT IS AUTONOMY?

Autonomy means gradually taking an active role in your own development while working with your coaches and trusted adults.

In tennis, this includes asking questions, making appropriate choices, communicating your needs and taking responsibility for actions within your control.

Autonomy does not mean handling every challenge alone. Knowing when to ask for guidance, rest or support is part of responsible independence.

THE 4 SELF-REGULATION & AUTONOMY SUB-SKILLS

01
SET YOUR INTENTIONS

Choose clear, realistic technical, tactical or mental intentions that help guide your training and competition.

02
MONITOR YOUR ACTIONS

03
MAKE INFORMED ADJUSTMENTS

Use your observations, feedback and experiences to identify one useful change or next step.

04
TAKE OWNERSHIP & SEEK SUPPORT

Become an active participant in your development, communicate your needs and ask for guidance when appropriate.

WHEN DO I USE THESE SKILLS?

BEFORE TRAINING

Choose one realistic technical, tactical or mental intention for today's session. Discuss it with your coach when appropriate.

SET YOUR INTENTIONS

DURING A TRAINING DRILL

Notice whether you are practising your intended skill. Observe your actions and identify what is helping or needs attention.

MONITOR YOUR ACTIONS

AFTER MAKING REPEATED MISTAKES

Recognize what happened, consider your coach's feedback and choose one manageable adjustment without judging yourself.

MAKE INFORMED ADJUSTMENTS

BEFORE AN IMPORTANT MATCH

Review your preparation, identify your match intentions and communicate any questions or concerns to your coach.

SET YOUR INTENTIONS · TAKE OWNERSHIP & SEEK SUPPORT

AFTER A DIFFICULT MATCH

Review what you practised, what you learned and what you would like to work on next. Discuss useful adjustments with your coach.

MONITOR YOUR ACTIONS · MAKE INFORMED ADJUSTMENTS

WHEN YOU NEED GUIDANCE

You are unsure how to improve a skill or manage a difficult situation. Ask your coach or a trusted adult for guidance and participate in choosing your next step.

01 — SET

What's my intention?

Choose one realistic technical, tactical or mental intention for today's training.

Make it specific and achievable.

02 — OBSERVE

What am I actually doing?

Notice your actions during the drill.

Compare what you practised with your original intention, without judging yourself.

03 — ADJUST & OWN IT

What's my next decision?

Choose one useful adjustment based on your observations or coach's feedback.

Take an active role in deciding what to practise next.

YOUR FIRST SERVE ISN'T CONSISTENT. WHAT CAN YOU DO?

You are practising your first serve, but the results are inconsistent.

SET: Choose one serving intention, such as a clear target or consistent preparation routine.

OBSERVE: Notice whether you followed your chosen routine and target.

ADJUST: Consider one manageable change with your coach.

OWN IT: Choose what to practise next and explain your decision.

YOU DON'T CONTROL EVERY RESULT. YOU CAN LEARN TO GUIDE YOUR DEVELOPMENT.

Autonomy develops gradually. Making your own decisions does not mean working without support. Ask questions, communicate your needs and use your coach's guidance when appropriate.

03 — APPLY: TAKE IT ON THE COURT

Avoid changing everything at once.

What's my next decision?

YOUR AUTONOMY IN ACTION CHALLENGE

During your next training session, choose one intention and take an active role in evaluating your progress.

SET → OBSERVE → ADJUST → OWN IT

"What did I choose, what did I notice and what will I do next?"

Autonomy develops gradually. Use your coach's feedback, respect your physical and emotional needs and ask for support when appropriate. Independent thinking does not mean acting without guidance.

04 — REFLECT: HOW DID I TAKE OWNERSHIP?

Q1

What intention or decision did I choose for myself during training or competition?

Q2

What did I notice about my actions, and what adjustment did I make or consider?

Q3

What would I like to take responsibility for next, and what guidance or support might help me?

AUTONOMY GROWS THROUGH CHOICES, REFLECTION AND LEARNING.
YOU CAN TAKE OWNERSHIP WHILE STILL ASKING FOR SUPPORT.

Take a moment to reflect if you wish. Your answers are personal and are not collected or shared through this page.
